Books to Eat 2016 from Pomaikai Elementary on Vimeo. It's the beginning of the year and we are kicking off our library skills library sessions during library time with 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders. They are learning how to become library smarty pants! In other words, they are learning about the library and how it is organized. The students are discovering through hands on stations and reading text about the system our library books are shelved. They are learning new library terms like "call number", "book spine", "Everybody Section" or, "Fiction Section". The library skills will help the students become independent learners and problem solvers when they come to the library!
It's the start of a new school year and we are jumping right into reading skills during library visits. The 4th graders spent time having purposeful talk about what it looks and sounds like when you read-to-self. There were many ideas and thoughts being shared as Mrs. Smith jot them down on the white board. The 4th graders then agreed that once they are finished with checking out a book they will find a spot in the library to read-to-self. Our 4th graders are a strong and smart group of students. I have a feeling we are going to have a lot of fun in the library this year!

The 3rd graders this year have been exploring and practicing photography skills with iPads. They took their iPads to Waihe'e and created a story line. The story would be displayed in photos and then edited on iMovie. The following week the classes spent their library sessions learning from Mrs. Smith and Ms. Aningat the step by step directions of how to make a movie in iMovie. The students learned about the format, how to add text to their film, create credits, and have their pictures tell a story. They haven't fully completed this lesson but they plan to showcase their films at Artist in Me Night on April, 7th! We are so proud of these young filmmakers!
Dear Pomaika'i Families, We had yet another very successful book fair in December. We raised over $3,000 for our library! We want to thank all of you who came to shop that week. We have such generous families at Pomaika'i! We hope you're reading more now that you have some new books added to you home library! Mahalo, Mrs. Smith |
